SSU Homecoming 2022

Savannah State University (SSU) celebrated Homecoming 2022 October 2-8 with a week packed with family, food and fun for all. This year’s theme, “We Remain Significant, Steadfast and Unstoppable,” speaks to the spirit of dedication to shaping young minds, preservation of our history and legacy and the and the impact SSU and her graduates have had on this city and the world. Students kicked of the celebration with a party on Sunday, Food Truck Feast on Monday, Residential Step Show on Tuesday, Pep Rally on Wednesday, and the Alumni Career Connections presented by the Office of Career Services and Leadership Development on Thursday.  On Thursday evening, the coronation, crowning Miss and Mr. Savannah State University themed “Odyssey to the Royal Throne” was held in Tiger Arena. All student activities were sponsored by the Campus Activities Board and the Department of Student Life.

Alumni got in on the festivities beginning Thursday with the crowning of Ms. Savannah State University National Alumni Association (SSUNAA) Lillie Hobbs, and her attendants Dionne Formey and Mary Ann Goldwire held in the Asa Gordon Library. During the program, the sashing of grand parade marshal Lawrence Hutchins and honorary grand marshal Attorney Nefertara Clark also took place. On Friday, golf lovers rose early to participate in the SSU Foundation’s Golf Scramble at the Savannah Harbour. On campus, the Alumni Class Reunion Breakfast honoring the classes ending in 2's and 7's sponsored by the Office of Alumni Relations was held in King Frazier’s Savannah Ballroom and was followed by the on-campus parade featuring campus and community organizations, Student Government Association leaders, members of the Royal Court and others. After making its way through the campus, the parade ended on the Felix Alexis Circle. There, the annual Fish Fry was held. The yard fest and alumni Greek stroll off followed, and Friday’s events culminated with the Greek step show in Tiger Arena. The alumni wrapped up Friday with an awards program entitled, “Friday Night Live” in the Savannah Ballroom. The alumni awards ceremony honors alumni chapters, individuals and families for the work they continue to do in the community on behalf of SSU. Attendees walked the orange carpet and enjoyed the musical stylings of JD Music Group.

On Saturday, the energy was high as spectators took to Theodore Wright Stadium to see the Tigers take on Virginia University of Lynchburg. The Tigers slayed the Dragons with a 28-14 win. As usual, the tailgating area was jam packed with alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends of SSU who celebrated the win late into the evening. Students and community members then converged on the EnMarket Arena for the official homecoming concert.

The celebration ended on Sunday giving thanks and praises, first with the SSUNAA’s virtual worship service and the “Worship Unleashed” Gospel Fest featuring the Wesleyan Gospel Choir on Sunday evening. With another successful homecoming in the books, we look forward to all that Homecoming 2023 has in store!
